Every developer has felt it: a fresh clone that takes hours to get running, a build that only works on one machine, or a setup that's impossible for a teammate - or an AI agent - to reproduce.

As projects grow, developer environments become infrastructure in their own right. Get them wrong, and onboarding slows, builds become fragile, and "works on my machine" never really goes away.

This talk explores the patterns behind development environments that scale - from solo open source projects to large mono and multirepos. We'll look at reproducible environment definitions, dependency caching, ephemeral versus persistent environments, and where tooling should replace documentation.

You'll also learn how high-performing teams measure developer experience with metrics like time-to-first-commit and onboarding time, rather than intuition, and why the best developer platforms succeed by making the right path the easiest one.

AI agents are now consumers of your development environment too. If a new contributor can't get started quickly, neither can an agent.

Whether you maintain an open source project or build software at enterprise scale, you'll leave with practical ideas for creating faster, more reproducible development workflows that developers actually want to use.
